The Ultimate Hunter

Jaws was a classic movie for sheer terror and violence more than thirty years ago.

Today, Appaloosa and Majesco brought together an underwater title loaded with the same panic and blood thirst. The game proves to be something of an underwater Grand Theft Auto, where the player, in the role of Jaws, the great white, goes out to cause carnage on Amity Island, the site of the original shark attacks.

Jaws has dozens of attacks on sea life, as well as hapless swimmers and boats, using crushing body slams and flesh eating teeth. The story is patchy at best—you are simply causing death and destruction. The biggest criticism I had with the game was the camera. It’s a manual controlled camera that pans all around Jaws as he swims, and you will often find it annoying to adjust it right when you are excited to go in for the kill.

The missions are all pretty much the same—kill this, eat that, break those. I found it more interesting to just swim around and tear things apart than do the missions.

The verdict

Six out of 10. Though Jaws is a lot of underwater fun, I found it to not be as exciting to complete. I would have rather swam around for hours eating things than have to go spit explosive barrels at an oil plant. It’s worth a try, but don’t expect much. Jaws works best when you have a spare hour and just want to cause some mayhem.
