The Union is in the process of adding 30 additional surveillance cameras in an effort to make the building more secure, according to Union Assistant Director of Operations Tom Viel.
The decision to add the cameras was in response to several incidents in the Union last year-including fires set off in the Fireside Lounge and in the restrooms as well as confrontations in the student organization wing-as well as a desire to make students feel more comfortable with their surroundings.
"With as large as this facility is, these cameras will help us be able to go back and find out who created the problem," Viel said. "We want to make sure we're covering those areas which aren't currently being watched."
Although the cameras will not be actively monitored, Client Services associates will be able to look back at digital recordings if there is a problem. The Union currently has 25 cameras in the building, most of which are located in non-public spaces. The new cameras are being added to the student org wing, the second floor lounge, the bookstore and other locations.
Viel said he expects the entire system to be fully operational by the end of the semester.
