The Film Studies Club and the Asian Series screenings can both be best described as just a gathering of fans of cinema, usually students from the Film and Film Studies Department, who agree on which themes to arrange for showing.

The Film Studies Club often screens one movie per week, usually with a theme in mind for that week or month. The theme of each showing changes drastically from the last, varying from cult classics and mainstream blockbusters to forgotten gems and absurd parodies. Previously shown movies include Blade Runner: The Final Cut, Gozu, Heavenly Creatures and Breaking the Waves.

The theme given to the month of February 2009 is "epic," and has already been endowed with four films, one for each week of February. Those films, in no particular order, are Lawrence of Arabia, Das Boot (the extended cut), Ben-Hur (the 1950's edition) and 2001: A Space Odyssey. The screenings will commence at noon on every Friday on campus in Mitchell Hall, Room 195. For more information, or the specific list of screenings, one can contact Josias Troyer at jjtroyer@uwm.edu or visit the club's website at uwm.edu/~jjtroyer/.

Screenings are open to everyone, whether they are a member or not, and free time is provided before each showing in case any non-members wish to ask questions or acquire information from each club. The atmosphere of each screening is fairly casual with discussions about each movie surrounding the screening.

The Asian Film Series is a weekly screening of a variety of works from East and Southeast Asia, usually originating from Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Mainland China, South Korea and Thailand. The films typically screened in the club are generally not well-known in the U.S. or have not been distributed adequately.

The schedule for the Asian Film Series thus far is as follows:
-January 29 - Fall Guy (1982) - A dramatic/slapstick story of a self-obsessed star actor, from the director of Battle Royale.
-February 5 - Lady General Hua Mu-Lan (1963) - A lavish production telling of the story of Mu-Lan through a mix of technicolor film and opera.
-February 12- The President's Last Bang (2005) - A previously banned and internationally popular film telling the assassination of President Park Chung-hee.
-February 19- Blind Shaft (2003) - Still not cleared for release in China; this film follows two con-men who exploit the illegal coal mining industry.
-February 26- SARS Wars (2004) - An over-the-top Thai comedy about kidnappers, sword wielding bounty hunters and a zombie infestation.

Screenings for the Asian Film Series take place on Thursdays at 6:30PM at Garland Hall, Room 104. More information about the club and its screenings can be found at asianfilimseries.blogspot.com.
